The Forth Naturalist and Historian

The Forth Naturalist and Historian (FNH) was set up in 1975 by several University and Central Regional Council staff. The aim was to provide a focus for activities and publications concerned with the wildlife, environment and heritage of the Forth area. Today FNH activities are organised by an unpaid board of volunteers (Board Members) who publish the Forth Naturalist Journal and organize an annual Man and the Landscape Symposium.

The annual Forth Naturalist and Historian journal has been published annually for over 30 years. The hundreds of authoritative articles have covered a diverse range of local topics dealing with anything from whooper swans to prehistoric rock art (Index of Articles). Most volumes include annual local weather records and bird reports, plus book reviews and notes. It is hoped that these volumes (31 as of 2008) provide a valuable successor to TheTransactions of the Stirling Field and Archaeological Society which was published between 1878-1939.

Complete runs of the journal are kept by the University and local public and national libraries. The Editor welcomes offers of appropriate articles and can be contacted via the Secretary (see below).

The FNH board organises an annual "Man and the Landscape Symposium" which is held at Stirling University. MAPS FOR ALL REASONS will be the theme of the 35th symposium in November 2009 . Recent topics have included "Conservation in a Changing Climate", "Scotland's Weather", "Landscapes by Design", "Landscapes of the Mines" and "Stirling - Scotland's Central City".

As well as the symposium and journal FNH has published a number of books and pamphlets of local interest (other publications). Several of these are in association with Clackmannanshire Field Studies Society (CFSS).
